Migration Assessment and Strategies
Record system recommendations, explicit overrides and decision evidence.
Assessment helps decide how an application or workload should transition. Strategies can include common migration dispositions — retain, retire, rehost, replatform, refactor and related modeled choices — but the available strategy set depends on the configured assessment model.
System suggestion versus human decision
CoreFinOps preserves the system recommendation separately from an authorized override. Changing a chosen strategy must record actor, timestamp and reason; it must not erase the original recommendation or fabricate confidence.
Inputs worth reviewing
Dependency uncertainty, legacy costs, licensing constraints, operational risk, target architecture assumptions, business criticality and migration readiness all influence a defensible choice. Missing inputs should be visible rather than silently defaulted to an optimistic result.
Linking strategy to economics
A strategy feeds the migration financial model. A “rehost” decision, for example, may imply less change effort but continuing target infrastructure cost; “retire” may have a different cost and decommission implication. Validate input assumptions before using outputs in approvals.
Decision discipline
Capture the proposed strategy, owner, alternative options, uncertainty and downstream action. An assessment is a decision aid; it is not an automated AWS migration operation.
