Cost Change Intelligence

Understand what changed without overclaiming causation.

Cost-change analysis investigates meaningful differences between comparable financial periods. CoreFinOps uses supported dimensions to explain contributions to the observed delta, including AWS-native scopes and mapped business contexts when evidence exists.

Read the comparison carefully

Confirm both windows have comparable length and completeness, the same currency and the same cost measure. A first export, partial month, AWS restatement or changed coverage may explain an apparent spike without any change in consumption.

What a contributor means

A service, region, account or workload may explain a mathematical share of a difference. That is not proof that this entity caused an operational incident or that one specific team is responsible. Correlation and causation must remain distinct.

Concept

A contributor explains a mathematical share of a delta — it does not prove responsibility or guarantee that addressing it will reduce future spend by the same amount.

Linking to action

Where a change has sufficient evidence, connect it to governance findings, owner review or an optimization action. Avoid translating a trend directly into guaranteed future savings.

Data limitations

If a prior period is unavailable, the source has been restated, or business allocation did not exist historically, the analysis should report incomplete comparison rather than synthesizing an unsupported historical category.
